newt gingrich in the primaries? is that what they want, the base or whoever you talk about, they want newt gingrich snapping at the media and kind of performing before the stage, given the theatrics you referenced? >> it's a split personality thing. mitt romney as i've been writing for months is a flawed candidate who won in a weak field. look who came in second. rick santorum. newt gingrich came in third, ron paul came in fourth. as i wrote that, that's not a field. that's a therapy group. of that group, you know, mitt romney was the most, is the most electable of that group. the process worked. i don't think the republican party can really blame anybody or even themselves for nominating the wrong guy. the trouble is the guy who is the best of the field lacks the common touch that wealthy, privileged people need. franklin roosevelt, privileged, wealthy, had the common touch. john f. kennedy had the common touch. ted kennedy and bobby kennedy did. nelson rockefeller did in new york. mitt romney does not convey that. >> that is such an interesting point, roger, you're making. i believe

except south carolina where newt gingrich started off hot and stayed hot. mitt romney is disciplined, focused in a debate he sounds and loos like a president as he did in his interview with brine williams on education nation yesterday. he will have a good debate performance. two, he needs an -- some form of implosion or serious mistake by the obama campaign or some international event that doesn't rally people around the president but focuses people on a perceived weakness. i don't think either of those are likely to happen. in terms of a mistake by the obama campaign, they've always been fairly safe and cautious. if this were a sporting event, i would say they're running out the clock right now. >> running out the clock and, in fact, perhaps too cautious. you've got hillary clinton going to, perhaps, a dozen meetings with foreign leaders and president obama already out of here in ohio, not meeting with any of the foreign leaders, do you think that they are playing it too safe by not meeting with president morsi, not meeting with netanyahu, avoided any pitfalls here in new york? >> w
of their concerns about todd akin. here he is doing a press conference last week with newt gingrich. newt gingrich there showing his support for todd akin. today republican senator jim demint and former presidential candidate rick santorum threw their support behind todd akin. republican senator roy blunt, remember him? the guy who said todd akin has to get out. he put out a statement today saying that now he is supporting todd akin. the state republican party, which had expressed grave public doubts about akin after his comments about some rapes being legitimate last month, they now say they're all in for todd akin as well. even the national republican party's senate campaign committee, the guys who said we're done when they were talking about todd akin, apparently they are thinking now of not being done with him anymore. so now we know just how offended all of those republicans really were about the legitimate rape comments. they were offended enough until the deadline passed and they couldn't get off the ballot and they couldn't replace him anymore, and now they've decided they're already with
the wrong guy? i'm not asking about gingrich, santorum and all the ones that ran in the primaries. i think clearly romney is a cut above them. we have some new polling evidence this week about the particular struggles that romney is having with middle class and working class voters on basically the question of can he identify with struggles, do you think he identifies with struggles? in ohio only 38% thought he could. the number for obama is 20 points higher. romney is basically running a platform you could call a top 1% platfor platform. i think of chris christie running the on the same platform but exude something completely dirch the. do you think a guy like chris christie would have more luck selling the republican message and might be closer in the race right now? >> it's possible, but you can never do a hypothetical race. no one knows how he would have worn through a long, drawn-out campaign. i like governor christie and support him on some initiatives. his overall persona, the bullying and tough guy, i'm not sure if that wears well over at long period of time. i'm sure how america r
gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so? >> -- to compete for latino votes, but he's not a skillful enough politician to anticipate that, and all he can do is say whatever is necessary to get him through the day. this comes out of his experience in the business community where, you know, all he did when he went in and closed these deals is say whatever was necessary to close the deal no matter whether it was true or not and then he'd negotiate about it later, you know, after he took over the company. so this is the world he comes out of, and it just does not equip him for politics. here is the other thing that i think has been missed in the last couple days is there's been some, you know, journalism that says, well, okay, he's not equipped for politics but he'd be a good president. no. if you're a bad politician, you're not going to be a good president either. >>
, it was newt gingrich offering some advice to romney's messaging strategy, telling him how to disarm president obama. we've heard from peggy noonan a couple of times now. how is the campaign reacting to all of this inside chatter? or are they? >> this is a constant irritation for the campaign. they feel like every donor, every republican who lost in a primary, and frankly, every reporter, thinks they know how to run a better campaign than they do. they wish that they could do our -- or they say they wish they could do our jobs too to give us an idea of the difference. they try to brush these things off. the campaign has its own staffers who help manage, especially the conservative media, reach out to try to keep things like that happy. but they undercut their conservative message when you say things like romney did to ron allen in ohio, they continue to undercut their ability to turn the page with conservative commentators. >> i always like getting your perspective on this next question, because you spend more time with governor romney than just about anything, with the exception of folks that
